Hi folks,

I recently bought an MG ZS with the 1.6 engine but the heater isn't really that warm, I'm assuming the thermostat is stuck as there is a little heat but nowhere near what it should be.

Can anyone tell me where the thermostat is on this engine and how easy it is to change, or could there be another problem causing it?

Thermostat housing is behind the block, under the inlet manifold. Could be that or could be a block in the heater matrix and/or associated pipework.

Not done it in a zs but imagine it's a fiddly job changing the thermostat given where it is. Get yourself a copy of the RAVE manual.

Does it have the SAAB valve to flow water into the matrix.
I would suggest its to do with this or a blockage due to old k seal etc.
If the engine gets up to temp I highly doubt it will be overcooling even with no stat!

Would a block allow a luke warm heat?, I'd have thought a blockage would mean no heat at all?

Where's the best place to get a copy?

The temp gauge sits just below the half way when up to temp, is this right?

How would I be able to tell if it has the SAAB valve?

The thermostat must be working to keep the temperature at half on the gauge. Check the bleed screw on the metal radiator pipe beside the head as it sounds like trapped air in the system. If you don't have climate control it could be the cable fallen off the flow valve. I have had that before. If you have climate control then sadly good Luck if its got a problem as parts are ultra rare, saying that my last one had climate control and bar having to repair the fan module it worked really well.

Follow the two hoses coming out from the bulkhead (these come from the heater matrix on the other side), towards the engine end of the matrix hoses there may or may not be a plastic tube linking the two pipes together - if there is one this is the Saab valve. A car of that age should have one fitted from the factory.
