Rover Fastenings Dimensions List project

Right.

Now it's crossed my mind a moment ago, because I don't know what length of bolt to buy for the water pump housing in my Vit, that it would be an invaluable resource to have a list of all the bolt sizes and lengths for pretty much the whole of each car.

So, here I am, may it do ya fine, and good folken, I seek aid and succor of you, yar.

I acknowledge that this is going to be a bit of a monster project, and furthermore, I acknowledge that that's a major understatement, however - I can but try.

I'm gonna write a list of cars, and engines, and folks, if you'd be so kind as to help me with this, any time you do a job on your beloved BL product, measure a bolt or two and help me out?

The first part is going to be generating a list of all the models, right down to trim levels, and just looking at this, I'm beginning to see how big a project this is going to be.
I'll start by just listing the more general names, but I hope to lay it all out in this sort of pattern;
- CAR --> BODY TYPE; (this if applicable, because for certain cars, the Metro, for example, it isn't). --> ENGINE --> TRIM LEVEL, followed by a simple list of set screw measurements in this pattern;
- FASTENING TYPE; (e.g - set screw/ bolt/ allen bolt, etcetera etcetera), DIAMETER --> HEAD SIZE --> LENGTH, (albeit with properly named descriptions, hopefully).

It will look quite repetitive for the moment, because I intend for it to be a full list, rather than just a crossover - rather than one of those tickbox affairs, a full list of bolt measurements for each and every car, so repeated bolt measurements are fine. Lord knows we've got the bandwidth, so let's make it as full a list as we can - that way, instead of having to cross-reference cars by a chart, we can just look down the list, find the car we want, look down that car's list of bolts and not have to fuss.

800s I've got help with, in the form of 800.info and Brad (mainly), but some of the other models I might have to ask for major help in listing all the models and trim levels that were made. 200s and Metros, just for example.

I also intend to mark them all up as set screws, rather than bolts, where possible. Unless shoulder length is specified, presume I've used a set screw.

I've also had a bit of a play to get the optimum length, and I reckon where known, bolt lengths can be split into overall, shoulder and thread, thusly;

They don't always use set-screws though. For example, the water pump doesn't use fully threaded bolts. I find that when replacing bolts it is the shank length that is more important to me because I can always cut down the thread part.

Tbf it would be a usefull thing to have handy, especially seeing as XPart sell new bolts at rediculous prices and the nearest dealer involves a 45 mile round trip. When I had to buy new rear suspension bolts for the lower arms of my Coupe I had to fork out £3.62 + VAT for EACH bolt, that was like £16 for 4 bloody bolts!

Would also be an idea to put down the load rating of the bolts seeing as you have so much time on your hands

Well where exactly are we supposed to know the details for the bolts from?! EPC and RAVE are useless when it comes to that, and the bolts themselves are usually equally useless only providing the load rating

Ok, this will seem strange but when doing the rear brake caliper carrier on the 800, the spanner/socket sizes are 8, 10, 12 and 14mm. Now, I thought that metric bolts of an even number diameter had odd numbered head sizes eg 13mm head on an 8mm bolt. Perhaps the EPC will give the bolt size but perhaps not the exact description.
I've bookmarked a US site which does bolts and setscrews and even goes into quite some detail about the different types.

Oil pick up pipe:

Sump oil drain:
