Honest opinions wanted

Post by Marty »

I have been browsing eBay and came across this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251098948972? ... 1423.l2649

Now this is not going to be to everyone's taste but i really like it very retro looking and im tempted to buy it

Whats your opinions on it ?

It would make that money in original form but the <100k mark doesn't help.

I'd want a build thread to verifiy the build.

One more thing i will never understand. The mk3 Escort, whether a 1.1 popular or an RS Turbo was a dire death trap rust bucket with no space, nasty cheap build and course mechanicals.

Just because something is popular it doesn't mean its good. That works for almost anything, but works especially well for fashion, music, movies and cars.

what? ... Sorry what day is it? Where am I?

I guess early fords are almost as bad as rovers but still

It looks like someone has really given that car some love so it could well be worth a look. But then if you have already had 2 going to see it is almost a commitment to buying ...

Never liked Escorts (probably after a inflatable dinghy in one had me off my (push)bike across his bonnet, up the windscreen and off the roof, but heyho).

Does look clean, but would be worried: "it's a friends, he don't want to sell it, but it's filling up may garage so gotta go". So he's not the legal keeper and his mate doesn't want it to go, could be a legal minefield.

Actually thinking about it, I don't like old Ford's (except Mk III Cortina, but that's nostalgia as my grandad drove one. Though oddly that nostalgia doesn't extend to Lada Riva's which he also owned).

did they make an rs1900 :? i know there was an rs1700 but that was a mk3 not a mk4. the 1900 conversion used an american block and was quite a popular choice before the zetec conversions came about. i believe the kit is a rattle snake kit, didnt like it back in the day but have to admit it has a bit of retro cool about it now.

I have been doing some poking about and by all accounts that is a very rare kit on the car. Only thing that concerns me is does it have any tin worm. The car is fairly local to me so I will call the seller tomorrow and pop over and have a good snout around it and if its as good as its described I may have a deal on it but the depends.

I think a car like that will only go up in value over the years and I will possibly do any little things that need doing and then store it and forget about it. Or make sure its well protected and keep it for dry weather use its not like I don't have other cars to use so its not my main car. I still don't know what it is but there is something I like about the boxy shape it has admittedly it won't be the fastest car I have ever owned but in my opinion the RS Turbo is an iconic car and the two I previously owned I found very fun to drive.

Ill keep you posted on what happens

The kit looks awful tbh.

The car itself can be a good car if you get a decent example. The problem is most of the originals are rotten now and donor shells are equally as bad.

A friend of mine had a standard S2 and apart from air-filter and exhaust (which needed replacing) he kept it standard. He had it for a couple of years and when it started to need parts it started to become expensive & he sold it.

Well it's obviously not quite as good as your Audi!

All the rest has been said above. I'm another (wouldn't) with that particular example TBH. I don't know what the make of the kit is, but it's not a very stylish looking body kit, and it's trying to be too XR4x4 for my liking. I'd have to say buy a nearly std one, and while everyone says the S1 is cooler and obviously mega bucks, you get much more value and a better car in S2 versions.

I'd see a mint and visually almost std mk4 RST as a very good equal and rival to a same condition MG Maestro turbo. I'd want the Stro alot more, but the smart money will always be in the Escort. I'm not these days that adverse to car's with aftermarket bodykit's, if they are tasteful and especially if they are very rare! If it's all fitted very well and the fit and finish is perfect, then it would still be an excellent car. I just think with alot of older car's less is more, and if the std car came with a decent bodykit like most tickford made car's for example (Maestro's and Capri's etc), then putting on any old aftermarket lairy at best kit is a real turn off. It's all in the kit and how it looks on the car though, and decent kit will always add something good to a car, for example Alpina BMW bodystyling stuff etc.

If you like that car and want to see it then great, but if your deliberately looking for a really nice RST as a fun car and even as an investment, then hunt down a nearly std one. Even most of the best clean rust free std one's will have uprated mechanicals, and that doesn't seem to affect value's in any negative way, but buying a clean tidy one, with only a few owners name's on the logbook and a mountain of receipts and history will be a very wise and clever move!

p.s. I've never driven either but which is the more fun car out of a Rover 220Gti turbo and an MK4 ERST? I know they are different era's, but i've heard more than a few people say that the RST is much more fun even std than the faster Rover turbo's to drive?
