Auschwitz German death camp

I know this is random but I watch a lot of war documentarys and for years that place has fascinated me I know millions lost there lives and that is sad but has anyone on here ever visited Auschwitz if so how do you go about it as that is one of the things on my bucket list.

Nice one cheers Dan would apreciate that some people may find it a bit morbid but I just find it fascinating and would like to go see the place for myself. They say its totally silent there and even the birds dont chirp bet its quite an airy place to visit.

Yes, when I worked in Germany, you could wander round pretty much anywhere when I went, it's certainly worth a visit if you're in the area.

I sadly agree.

Something went on for sure, but whether its what is. Generally accepted and that number is up for debate.

There were more camps than just Auschwitz, they had them dotted all over Europe and I wouldn't doubt the numbers at all especially with the ruthless efficiency these places operated at.

Not been to Auschwitz but I've been to the first/prototype camp at Dachau outside of Munich, pretty sobering places.

No reason to doubt the numbers involved, the camps in Germany were just a part of it, there are lots more dotted around East Europe.

I went on a staff ride to Auschwitz a few years ago. The place brings you to tears when you take on board what went on there. Eerily quiet too, no birds singing etc.

My girlfriend went there this year, said the same about the lack of birdsong and how harrowing it all felt.
She was really saddened by it all.
Said they killed thousands and thousands in the last few days as they knew the allies were coming so they stopped soon it with the gas chambers etc as it wasn't quick enough!
Don't know if I would like to visit myself.

I know its morbid so to speak to go there but ive seen so many documentaries on the place I just want to go see it for myself.

Marty, just do it. I'm glad Poland didn't destroy it in a weird way, it's a sore memory of what was a horrific time. Kind of makes you feel more contempt for your fellow man.

What's even sader is when you see world war 1 and 2 documentaries all those people who lost there lives ect. If it was not for those guys we would not live as we due today thats why I have so much respect for the elder generation just a pitty not all have respect it saddens me when you hear of a pensioner thats been mugged or along them lines where are those peoples morals.

I will arrange to go there next year when the weather warms up.

Dans right, it was something like 5.5million Polish and soviet soldiers (who were jewish) that were killed in combat and about 500,000 people killed in camps. (or something like that)
iirc we had more people murdered in camps by the japs than the jews in germany. Not saying it was right, but so people dont forget we suffered badly to and thats been pretty much forgotten about.

I remember when i joined the army you go on a battle field tour and we turned up at some farm land, but during world war 2 a huge battle went on their the germans wer dug in deep so we bombed them for a solid 7 days firing 10s of thousands of artillery shells at them. Us being pretty confident know one could survive that we just started strolling towards the town, then the germans popped up and slotted thousands of us...... When we were their their was about a dozen un exploded artillery munitions that had been ploughed up by the farmer..... the army collects them once a month to do controlled detonateions.

I will do another battle field tour but i want more time so i can see more places.

I also was in Auschwitz, the most terrifying moment was the visit in musem - when I saw those hair.... whole room was full of human hair - germans cut them off. You should go there, it could help to imagine how vile, stupid and unnecessary is war.

Not wierd at all imo. 2 places, well, 3 places i've wanted to go to are Normandy, Auschwitz and Chernobyl.

Very into the WW2 stuff, not so much WW1.

IN for the roadtrip tbh, might have a bit of trouble bobbing to Chernobyl though. Still bound to be a cornershop open somewhere in there though.

Your figures are way out. Going by records nearly 3 million died in camps and nearly 3 times the figure you suggested were executed in the streets (1.4 million). Less than 400,000 British soldiers lost their lives in WW2, and that includes the colonies.

To put things in perspective over 60 million people died in the WW2, and over half of those were civilians.

The Auschwitz room at the Imperial war museum in London was sobering enough, with the glass wall full of shoes and the children's clothes, teddy bears etc.. I can only imagine how sad the real place would be like to visit.
