Marty's Stock Rod Build

Starting this thread for those who may be interested and something a bit different.

Having raced on the oval for quite a few years and gave up a few years back after racing Lightning Rods , Mondeo Rods and stock cars decided I missed the hobby so have decided to build myself a car I have built oval racing cars in the past.

The formula I'm going into is Stock Rods these are a stripped out de-skinned hatch back vehicle running 1400cc Race engines.

So for that I'll need a vehicle and my choice is a Vauxhall Corsa C it's got to be fully stripped and caged ECT the engine that's show in the pictures below will be removed as it's no good for me at all. I had a few hours on the car tonight and the pics below will show where I'm upto and where I started.

My boy is also getting involved in the build and once he has grown a bit more I'll build him a Junior Rod it's basically the same cage ECT apart from they only run a 1000cc none tuned engine.

I hope you enjoy this log it will take a while to build as there is a lot to do

These pictures will give you and idea what the cage is going to be like and the last picture will hopefully be my end goal all be it sign writing/sponsors will be different but will look basically the same.

Got on with the stock rod today and it was put on a diet !!! Made good progress the de-skinning is only rough cut and will all be tidied up so nice and neat here is a few pictures showing how the day went also got the fuel tank removed and a lot of the inside work continues tomorrow.......

Another day on the stock rod started of like this





And by the end of today it was like this

Engine removed as not running that



Finished of the stripping inside and removing sound denting some still left to do



The bonnet also needed to go on a diet so that got de-skinned still got the boot to do






All in all not a bad weekend on it and it's just about ready for me to start caging it after a few more bits are removed

Not much happened today but a few items have arrived for the build

Sabelt 6 point harness

Pop of steering wheel boss


Steering wheel


Starting and accessory pannel for main ignition , fan , fuel pump and guage illumination



New ignition system wiring to go from distributor to ignition module



Main kill switch for emergency use

A few hours on the car after work tonight how the evening started



How the evening finished

Front removed and wings



Tidied up round filler neck hole



Started removing one of the rear pannel skins to loose some more weight and makes it easier to straiten should I get a knock from behind


Removed some more of the floor bracings



Rear bumper removed


Not a bad few hours on the car

A couple of hours on the car tonight after work again and this how it was




This how it is now even less left the car is now nice and light still got a couple of bits to remove.

A little update

removed all the glass and put the boot on a diet.



There is not much more left to remove now


Got the engine on the stand today




And removed the exhaust maunfold and rocker cover to expose camshaft and remove camshaft pully


Then undo head bolts 2 snapped in the block but machine shop soon sort that then remove cam carrier this exposes the rockers and lifters so remove all them as well


And then pull head off marked pistons so know there origional cylinder


Next was sump of to expose con rods and crank result the sump is already baffled





Undo all the conrod bolts and pop pistons out and remove oil pick up pipe


This left just the crank in place remove the crank caps and you left with this




Lift crankshaft out and remove bearings and you are left with a bare block



When removing the oil pick up this is exactly why you should not go shoving loads of sealer anywhere near oil ways or sump ECT!!!

That's just asking for oil starvation leading to engine failure !!


Jobs that need doing

Bores checked and honed

Broken studs from block removed

Block face machined

Head face machined

3 angled valve seats machined

Cam carrier re-faced

Crank polished as it has a few marks nothing majot

New rings

New camshaft and adjustable vernier

Solid lifters

New rocker arms

New water pump

New cambelt kit

New ends and mains

New high pressure oil pump

Full gasket and seal set

Good clean of all parts and a lick of paint

And we should just about be there ......

Loads of great work done their as always marry, my oil pick up pipe was fully clogged on my old forge lump..... something Defford worth cheaking.

I just make sure I'm very sparing with sealer here is my choice of cam spec It will be a tad lumpy and some nice lift haha




There is still a lot to do as I'm fussy and like to pay attention to detail so will hopefully be a work of art once done I won't want to scratch it haha

Had a few hours on the car today and managed to trim some more weight out of it !!!

Cross bracings on floor removed and pillar bracings removed

Pillar bracing in place


And with it removed



This all what was removed today



And gave the inside a good clean out ready for cage now that's next


All cuts still need cleaning up and made tidy but they can be done after the cage is all in its coming on now

How much does the shell weigh now? Have you got a way of checking?
Clearly you rely entirely on the cage for any strength as the car shell is just a skin now pretty much.

Yeah the cage ties everything together as it is pretty much just a skin now

It does not weigh much at all once it is built it will be going on the scales to be setup and corner weighted so will know how much it weights then

Had a good session on the car and got arches and skirts fitted it's starting to take shape now

Few hours on it tonight so time to fit the rear bumper and side supports




Next I have started to blend arches and skirt to the car looks better



Next was some more weight saving !! Now you probably thinking not possible but it was the passenger door has been skinned


Also there is no need for a door handle so I have removed that you will see the plate put over the hole in above picture and this is it finished after a bit of filler


So not a bad few hours on the car another step closer

Things are moving along well I have mounted the passenger door skin and have mounted the boot and front bumper

Brackets in place that are drilled and tapped 6mm to take the bolts



And door skin bolted in place



Next is the front bumper plates added and front bumper secured


The top section of bumper / grill I'll pick up of bonnet posts I'll show that in another update when I come to that part

Had another good day on it today front turret supports , steering column and started the lower half of drivers side chick bars.

The seat loosely laid in and got to be mounted properly yet

Got the seat and centre screen bar fitted tonight ignore the big bolts on seat they was used just as a mock they will be changed for shorter ones. Still got to add a bar to brace the rear of the seat that will be shown in a later update

Let there be paint on the inside

It's not 100% perfect but that will do its a race car not a show car

You've spent all that time trimming as much metal out as possible, then you've gone and put a layer of paint on everything!!! You'll have to shave all the hair of your entire body to compensate

Great progress with the car though, wish I had the time... when does the season start?

I've not got bits back from machine shop yet and need to get car ready before I worry about engine.

Nothing major to report on progress wise apart from fuel line been fitted



Didn't have much time tonight so made the most of what I had anything done is another step forward

The colour is on it will come to life more once it's lacquered



Tomorrow I'll paint the doors , boot and bonnet and then a case of bolting them on.

I'll paint the engine bay when I do the dash pod as that's going to be green

Another day over will now leave it a few days and give it a good mop over another couple of small bits to paint but nothing major
