Le Mans 2008

Post by Mynheers_a_pint »

ok this year me and a mate are planning on going. I say planning, we have basically got everything sorted, but do any previous attendies have any survival tips/bargain solutions for the weekend? I know Leo goes very regularly so i'm hoping he has a fairly detailed insight to share but anyone else?

Also, does anyone know about insurance while driving abroad? Do you need a specific insurance policy that covers you for driving abroad or will any standard fully comp policy cover you? Or does it depend on the comapny and i'd need to speak with them?

I'm gonig in the pulsar so i will definatly get european breakdown cover

Oh and related, though random... anyone know where i can get retarded graphics for cheaps? :D Specifically a custom 1 that says les bibliotheque des fromage that takes up the entire length of the car. (it's one of our comedy sayings...(long story))

For custom graphics, give http://www.hollographics.com/ a call- prices depend on how many colours and how big etc, but they're pretty good.

Most insurance companies cover you in euro land- should be in your small print somewhere.

Will have to keep an eye out for you there!

This will be more 4th or 5th le mans this year.

Here are my top tips :

France driving tip: holders of EU driving licences who exceed the speed limit by more than 24mph (40km/h) will have their licences confiscated immediately by the police. (not always the case but be aware)

Speed limits: standard legal limits (varied by signs) for private vehicles without trailers: built-up areas 31mph (50km/h), outside built-up areas 55mph (90km/h), but 68mph (110km/h) on dual carriageways separated by a central reservation and 80mph (130km/h) on motorways. Lower speed limits apply in wet weather and to visiting motorists who have held a driving licence for less than two years: 49mph (80km/h) outside built-up areas, 62mph (100km/h) on dual carriageways and 68mph (110km/h) on motorways.

Website with good information: http://www.abelard.org/france/first-arrival.asp (read the bit on the yellow diamonds - its VERY important)

You are REQUIRED to carry :
- V5 for the vehicle you are driving
- Your insurance policy docs
- A GB sticker (or modern plates with the logo)
- Warning triangle
- Reflective jacket

They also operate on the spot fines, if you can't pay it they will march you to cash machine or jail (again I'm not sure how common this is but its a possiblity)

As for insurance if you have a UK policy you will be able to get European cover added on. If you want to insure more people or don't have a policy on the car I would suggest www.dayinsure.com

Beakdown cover - nearly all companys operate a large fee for recovering your car to the UK and there are other conditions. Lots of research required.

That should get you going for a start - also remember if you have had your license for less than 2 years or are under 21 then the speed limits are actually lower for you!

Have a good trip - its always a riot, last year I had a Mondeo estate sideways, my mate dinged his Astra and another mate came off his bike! Normally its a lot more sedate than that!

I believe most of the supermarkets have 'Sans Plomb' (unleaded) 95 and 97 - but I can't remember if they have different units to us...

what days are you going Friday onwards you will struggle to get to the local supermarket so stock up early....

i am waiting on the ACO for my tickets still this year.

There is a tram into town if this is operating it will be easier to get supplies.

97 is available in most total stations but total fuel imo is crap at the best of times.....

Fireworks officially are not allwed on the ferrys.....

take a portaloo if you have space, but that need does depend on your chosen campsite. Get used to cold water, showers sinks etc are nearly always cold.

Anything valuable lock away in your car whenever you are not there.

Take pro plus and ensure you have a fry up the morning you leave, you will have a hangover

The bits you dont remember are the best bits!!!! If you drink that is.

Book next year now, you WILL return year in year out from now on.

Its frigging awesome!! Have fun!

Find beermountain.com

You may find TVR's common on your return and lust after more exotic cars. That is really the only downside. All the rst are part of the fun.

Hopefully we will see you there

I take you used Glue.

We made a 6 or 7 high wall without glue but drunk people aren't very good at adding to the wall as a friend found out. He ended up rebuilding it and we stood back laughing at him.

Mynheers a pint - Where did you find a picture of me :o I have loads of other things all 10 % of normal prices to good not to take a chance. I say
