Project bmx- very picture heavy

Post by cas_uk »

Hi guys I thought i would show my project, it was a second hand bmx when i first bought it :-

( a WeThePeople - Phoenix )
Image

Stripped it completely down to bare metal with nitromors and a paint stripping wheel on a mains powered drill :annoy: lots of hard work
Image

The rim on the back wheel was donald ducked so i purchased an identical one but not chrome this time, in aluminium finish as it was cheaper and the chrome will only flake off in years to come anyway

ImageImage

ImageImage

modified my 12 year old trusty spoke key (bmx spokes are so close together it is murder to get a full size spoke key in)
Image

ImageImage

With that done it was time to pick out a colour, my son adores the monster energy colour and after many hours of searching on the net the closest to it i could find was kawasaki green, being a novice spray painter of car parts with rattle cans it was now time to try and learn how to spray with a gun (kinda baptism with fire way of learning but i was pretty confident and studied up loads on the net)

Test colour on forza 4 of what i was hoping to achieve:-

Image

Its basically a green with gold so went and bought the paint:-

And purchased gold pearl on ebay to add to the lacquer to make it more than just green (hopefully wont be too many this colour out there--IF ANY)

Spray painting commenced (picture of first attempt with shitty old gun-hence why i bought new)

Bought A better spray gun, ebay to the rescue again, not a top of the range jobby but was confident again of this guns abilities after asking advice from others.
Image

Must have sat in primer for about three weeks in the house while i searched for a new gun then I went for the colour :-

ImageImage
ImageImage

I was quite impressed with how flat and glossy the 1k colour i bought came out, flatted a few areas which had run with some 1200grit wet and dry and let it sit for about three days to dry out
ImageImage

Now time for the bit i was dreading doing the lacquer :| with the gold pearl added :-

ImageImage

Really difficult to capture the gold pearl with a camera as inside out of the sun it just looks like the green is lighter, and outside the glossyness just reflects the light away, the two best pictures i could take :-

Image
Image

It does really really pop in the daylight, actually now my favourite colour ever

Started building it another two days later, new parts included :-

Pedals
chain (gold)
bars
brakes
brake cable
grips

Gone with a white to keep it brighter than putting all black parts on.

Image
ImageImage

Fitted all the parts except the handlebars as they didnt arrive until today

Finished bike :-

ImageImageImageImage
Handlebars are massive, they feel double the size of what mine were when I bmxed!!
Not far off the size of my passage doorframe!
Image
Image

Sat next to one of my bikes before it goes off for santa to bring on christmas day

Thanks for looking i am very pleased with the end result and hope he takes up in bmxing where i left off (stopped when he was born the started mtbing about three years ago)

Chris

a almost snapped a £200 federal devision frame back in 2002,headtube would have taken one more flat landing to go, cracked the entire lower tube  wondered why it creaked for about a month lol  bought a hoffman kagy pro after that one.
Still have a WeThePeople primate frame here which i never got around to building back up after giving up, the only part i have left and judging by how how much it weighs compared to the green one its now fit for scrapping lol, unless anyone on here wants it for free, was a nice frame back in the day

Cool BMX project, and yeah the paint finish is a bit smart indeed for a BMX!

Nice to see a non car project as well! When i get my my work shares pay out in september (hopefully £1.1k ish) , i'll have to start a project thread for my Kawasaki KMX200 re-build that i've been planning for 5years!

Probably a lot more involved with yours than my little project so definitely get a thread up. I will read it lol
