Simple enough I thought, other reason would be the one to go for but the back of the form lists motor vehicle dismantler (salvage dealer) within the trader section

V62 new logbook form and Cat D
I've bought a Cat D write off from local salvage yard and it hasnt got a V5. Went on the gov.uk website and got the V62 form to apply for the logbook but a bit confused on section 3 - "why dont you have a V5C?" The options are it has been lost or stolen, I cannot produce it for another reason or I bought the vehicle and havent received the logbook from the previous keeper/ trader.

Want to make sure its right first time so I dont end up playing postal ping pong with the dvla goons!

Bought from trader not received
The logbook will come back with the fact it's been a write off slapped on the bottom of the logbook

I'd go for bought from trader as well, it's a pity they shut all the dvla local offices, it made things so much easier to go in and talk to someone face to face.
Will it be marked as cat d ?

My ZR is a cat d. There is nothing on the v5 to indicate this. It's only cat c where you get a marker until a VIC (identity check) has been completed. HPI check will obviously show any write off details if it's been registered as such.

You won't get the log book until you've taken it for a VIC check...
Happened to me with a car I bought for parts.

Cat D doesn't require a VIC.

If the DVLA have it registered as Cat D on the system then they will charge you for a new V5. The reason you didn't get the V5 is because the insurance companies are meant to destroy them when the car is written off.
Cat D you must include the fee for a new V5, Cat C the cost of the new V5 is included in the VIC fee.

Is this correct? You can buy Cat D cars from Copart and often the V5 is present. At what point would the DVLA register it as a Cat D? Presumably when the insurance company informs them.southside wrote:If the DVLA have it registered as Cat D on the system then they will charge you for a new V5.

Yup back of the v62 says its only cat c where the v5 is free, assume thats because you also need to shell out for a vic check. Lost or other cat write offs are 25 quid.

Interesting. I only ask as my car was a cat D but came with the V5. I also work with a colleague who recently bought a cat D from a trader (which I assume went through auction) and that came with a v5 too.

Re: V62 new logbook form and Cat D
It all depends if copart bothered to send the V5's back to the DVLA or not I suppose. If you get one then it's just luck of the draw I guess.
When my mum crashed her 75 off the insurance wrote it off and a copart lorry came direct to her house to collect it. The driver just filled out the trade slip and took the rest of the V5 with him and that was Cat C
I bought a Cat C once that came with a V5 but when I tried my luck and sent it to the DVLA with my details on it they sent a letter back saying no new V5 would be issued until the VIC had been carried out, which I already knew, I was just hoping it may not have been recorded.
