Getting rid of scrap car

Post by David-Ti »

I know the cost of scrap metal is really low but it looks like close to impossible getting a shell hiab'd these days! Then anyone else wants all four wheels on the car to winch on a low loader.. Few years ago you could phone up and they would be round the same day. :(

Does anyone know of someone nationwide or within the bucks area who either has a hiab or doesn't mind winching a vehicle on castors?

Had this issue David myself recently

R8 220 shell

Not a sausage interested in coming for it.

Had to cut shell up with a 9" grinder in sections and tske it in two trips in back of a transit

I've been fairly lucky in that my local yard will still collect non-rolling shells for free. When i scrapped a 75 last summer the chap collecting was saying that they were only getting £35 for a tonne of metal.

I've had to recently scrap a 75 tourer. Removed everything we wanted including engine panels etc, winched it onto my trailer as a rolling shell, then took the suspension and rear subframe off.

And better yet, when we got to scrappies because it's now a fully decommissioned shell we got £50 for just over 600kg which was a lot more than I expected. The time before I dragged a complete car minus engine and box and didn't get anything for it.

If it's a bare shell could you get a couple of strong mates to lift it onto a trailer or recovery van? If not you could always hire a grinder, just hope the neighbors aren't too touchy with noise...

I've not had any issues - when I scrapped my Coupe shell 2 years ago they just winched it across the car park, and I scrapped my Dads old Tourer earlier this year without drivetrain (though on wheels) without any bother. Didn't get anything for either but didn't have to pay anything to get them scrapped. This was in South Oxfordshire from a place in Oxford or Thame iirc.

I do know that the local council can take scrap cars, as i remember my dad scrapped the Toyota gt4 he had (due to rust). https://www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/waste- ... ed-vehicle or http://avehicledisposal.co.uk/

When I used to scrap old race car shells I would winch it onto the trailer, remove everything I wanted to keep, tow it to the weigh bridge and drive into the yard where the crane would grab it off the back and I would drive off to the weigh station and collect. Whether that still happens today is probably down to H&S regs!

Scrapped an MGF shell a couple of years ago, I built a Dolly for it and wheeled it to the street,
the local scrappy was there in 10 mins, winched it on, gave me a ticket for destruction and
happily drove away, got the DVLA part a week later, just ring around if no one seems interested,
someone will take it.

I have something sorted now. I ended up building a rear dolly for it and put a front end on so I could wheel it off the drive. No one would lift a car that I tried..
